Heaven, Earth and Hell Mural

This unique mural is a painting by Frans Francken II entitled “Allegory of Man’s Choice” (circa 1635). It depicts three
realms: heaven, earth and hell. Minerva, goddess of wisdom, stands at the centre directly beneath the open heavens,
accompanied by Faith, Hope and Charity. To her right sits a young shepherd, who appears to represent mankind at a
moral crossroads. Reaching out to him from the right are mythological fgures associated with carnal desires, like Venus
(love) and Bacchus (wine).
